When it comes to doing the weekly shop, it can be a real struggle to keep costs down as everything seems to be getting pricier. It often feels like a quick trip to the supermarket for a few essentials can set you back a fortune these days. With prices on the rise, many people are having to cut back on their usual purchases just to afford the basics.
Costco is typically the go-to place for shoppers looking to buy in bulk and save some cash. However, one Costco customer in the US was left gobsmacked when their bill for just 10 items came to a staggering £67 ($90).
The shopper had picked up grapes, two pomegranates, a bunch of bananas, a box of plums, two jars of jam, almond flavoured crackers, a pint of milk, a pint carton of organic cream, more almond flavoured crackers, and a jar of pickles.
In a post shared on Reddit, the irate shopper wrote: "Am I the only person who thinks that's insanely expensive for this many things... most being produce?"
"Milk, heavy cream, pickles, Brie, plums, pomegranates (3 more not pictured), bananas, grapes, crackers, three little jam jars pack."

"That's insane," commented another. Another said: "That's why I stopped paying my Costco card, just go to Aldi."
One other wrote: "I'm a regular shopper at Costco, and I cannot for the life of me see how this totals out to £67 ($90). I just went yesterday, and my trolley was packed to the brim, including some other household necessities and it came out to £233.60 ($300). I just can't understand how this got you to £67 ($90)."
One disgruntled shopper remarked: "When I compare the price per pound for produce (especially fruit) at Costco versus my local Whole Foods - it is nearly always cheaper at Whole Foods. If you consider Kroger too then I just don't know how people justify the cost."
Another customer, who has also noticed a recent hike in prices, shared: "I believe it. Yesterday I got 2 packs of whole chicken, box of gummies, 1 10lbs bag of potatoes, gallon of milk, gallon and half of oil, 1 pair kids snow gloves a 5lbs bag of onions, 1 3lbs of grapes and 1 raspberry. It was $85 [£64]. Costco is nice, but I think Sam's Club wins with the cheaper prices."
However, others were quick to point out that the annoyed shopper, who vented their frustration on Reddit, had purchased high-quality products, which could be the reason for the higher costs.
One user pointed out: "You bought Horizon's Organic Whipping cream which is like £13.42 ($18), box of the pomegranate which is £12.67 ($17) and then the jam pack which is also £12.67 ($17). That alone is almost £44 ($60). You buy premium products you pay premium prices, I'm so confused why you're confused."
Another chimed in: "Pomegranates and Brie are about half of that. Don't get me wrong, both are damn delicious. Still." One other added: "It's Costco. Things are bigger and more expensive but you save in the end."
Yet another wrote: "3 packs of jam, 1kg of peanut butter, huge bottle of kefir? A bunch of a healthy and beautiful fruit, organic crackers, and a huge wheel of fancy cheese. [The price] seems fair for all of this.
"Looks like very high quality produce. I'm not shocked at that price - even if it does suck," commented one other.
One other said: "I could find milk, bananas, and grapes a lot cheaper elsewhere. I would consider this cart to be mostly premium products. I wouldn't, buy that horizon milk on a budget."
